ACIPHEX®

AcipHex blocks acid production in the stomach. It is prescribed for the short-term (4 to 8 weeks) treatment of sores and inflammation in the upper digestive canal (esophagus). This condition, known as gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), is caused by the backflow of stomach acid into the esophagus over a prolonged period of time. Because GERD can be chronic, your doctor may continue to prescribe AcipHex to prevent a relapse after your initial course of treatment and to relieve symptoms of GERD such as heartburn. AcipHex can also be prescribed for the short-term (up to 4 weeks) treatment of duodenal ulcers (ulcers that form just outside the stomach at the top of the small intestine), and for Zollinger-Ellison syndrome, a disease which causes the stomach to produce too much acid. The drug is classified as a "proton pump inhibitor." It works by blocking a specific enzyme essential to the production of stomach acid. It begins reducing acid within an hour of administration. AcipHex side effects will work even if your symptoms are caused by a serious condition such as stomach cancer. For that reason, doctors are warned to rule out cancer whenever prescribing AcipHex. Side effects cannot be anticipated. If any develop or change in intensity, tell your doctor as soon as possible. Only your doctor can determine if it is safe for you to continue taking AcipHex. Headache is the most common side effect of AcipHex, occurring in two people out of 100.

What storage conditions are needed for this medicine? Keep this medication in the container it came in, tightly closed, and out of reach of children. Store it ACIPHEX at room temperature and away from excess heat and moisture (not in the bathroom). Throw away any medication ACIPHEX that is outdated or no longer needed. Talk to your pharmacist about the proper disposal of your medication.

What should I do if I forget a dose? Take the missed dose as soon as you remember it. However, if it is almost time for the next ACIPHEX dose, skip the missed dose and continue your regular dosing schedule. Do not take a double dose to make up for a missed one.

ACIPHEX delayed-release tablets are enteric-coated to allow rabeprazole sodium, which is acid labile, to pass through the stomach relatively intact. After oral administration of 20 mg ACIPHEX, peak plasma concentrations (Cmax) of rabeprazole occur over a range of 2.0 to 5.0 hours (Tmax). The rabeprazole Cmax and AUC are linear over an oral dose range of 10 mg to 40 mg. There is no appreciable accumulation when doses of 10 mg to 40 mg are administered every 24 hours; the aciphex side effects pharmacokinetics of rabeprazole are not altered by multiple dosing. The plasma half-life ranges from 1 to 2 hours.

ACIPHEX SIDE EFFECTS

Aciphex is available for oral administration as delayed-release, enteric-coated tablets. The recommended adult oral dose is one Aciphex 20 mg delayed-release tablet to be taken once daily for four to eight weeks. Take each dose with a full glass of water. Do not break, chew, or split the tablets. Swallow them whole. They are specially formulated to release slowly in your body.

Serious side effects from Aciphex are rare. Stop taking Aciphex and seek emergency medical attention if you experience an allergic reaction (difficulty breathing; closing of your throat; swelling of your lips, tongue, or face; or hives) to Aciphex. Less serious side effects from Aciphex are also uncommon. Continue to take Aciphex 20 mg and talk to your doctor if you experience headache; upset stomach or diarrhea; insomnia or nervousness; or a rash or itching. Side effects other than those listed here may also occur. Talk to your doctor about any side effect that seems unusual or that is especially bothersome.

Before taking Aciphex, tell your doctor if you are taking any of the following medicines: ketoconazole (Nizoral), ampicillin (Omnipen, Principen), iron (Feosol, Mol-Iron, Fergon, Femiron, others), digoxin (Lanoxin, Lanoxicaps), or cyclosporine (Sandimmune, Neoral). You may not be able to take Aciphex, or you may require a dosage adjustment or special monitoring during your treatment if you are taking any of the medicines listed above. Drugs other than those listed here may also interact with Aciphex. Talk to your doctor and pharmacist before taking any prescription or over-the-counter medicines
